• Meme activity has increased, but September trading has remained highly volatile across major tokens.

  • SPX6900 and BONK recorded strong August-to-September advances before experiencing significant pullbacks.

  • Continued volume, liquidity, and broader altcoin participation remain important signals for assessing whether momentum can persist.

Memecoins are back under the microscope as traders try to figure out whether this altcoin rotation everyone's been talking about can actually hold through September. And the data so far isn't giving a clean answer either way.

Rather than the straight-up rally people might've hoped for, the picture is messier. Looking at the week of September 7 to 13, a basket of eight major meme tokens fell 12.5% overall, and seven of those eight ended the week in the red. SPX6900 took the hardest hit, down 13%, with PEPE, SHIB, and BONK also closing lower.

Basically, the sharp pumps that got everyone excited were followed almost immediately by equally sharp pullbacks — a reminder of just how fast sentiment can flip in this corner of the market. Whether that's just short-term shakeout noise or a sign the rotation is losing steam is still an open question.

However, the broader August-to-September picture remains important because several tokens had already recovered substantially from their mid-August levels. SPX6900, BONK, PEPE, and SHIB all remained above their August 16 closing levels despite September's volatility, showing that recent weakness has not erased the entire previous move.

PEPE Faces a Volatile Rotation

Pepe has remained one of the largest meme assets by market capitalization, with trading activity continuing to place it among the market's more visible speculative tokens. Its September performance has been uneven, following a strong August session before subsequent selling reduced some gains.

The token's position within the broader meme market means its performance can provide useful information about whether capital is continuing to rotate toward established meme assets. Sustained volume and broader market participation would therefore remain important indicators for traders monitoring PEPE.

BONK Remains Closely Tied to Solana

BONK is the Solana-flavored piece of this puzzle, and it put together one of the stronger bounces in the September  stretch, climbing 22.2% on the week. That momentum didn't stick around long, though — the following week it gave back 7.3%.

It's a decent snapshot of how fast things rotate in the smaller-cap meme corner. Gains pile up quickly, then unwind just as quickly once risk appetite cools off. BONK in particular tends to move with whatever's happening to liquidity across Solana's broader trading ecosystem, so it rarely acts in isolation.

Fartcoin Tracks Speculative Appetite

Fartcoin remains another Solana-linked meme asset that is frequently associated with short-term speculative activity. Unlike larger meme coins, its smaller market structure can produce sharper price movements when trading interest suddenly increases.

Market participants watching Fartcoin would likely focus on volume, liquidity, and whether gains extend beyond brief social-media-driven bursts. Those measures can provide more useful context than price movement alone.

SPX6900 Shows High Volatility

SPX6900 has been the wilder ride. What's notable is what's driving it: coverage of those moves has tied them to the broader crypto rally and a spike in social-media chatter, not to any real project-specific catalyst. In other words, attention has been doing most of the heavy lifting — which is also why the reversals come so fast.

Shiba Inu Remains a Large Meme Asset

Shiba Inu continues to rank among the larger meme cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, giving it a different market profile from smaller speculative tokens. September data showed SHIB gaining 11.6% during the September 1–6 rebound before declining 6.4% during the following week.

The contrasting weekly results show why the broader altseason narrative remains dependent on sustained participation rather than isolated meme rallies. If liquidity continues rotating into higher-risk assets, these five tokens may remain closely watched as market conditions develop.
