Trump threatens tariffs if EU makes Canada an associate member

Donald Trump threatened "very serious tariffs" or a halt to trade with Europe if the EU's plan to make Canada its first associate member is a "hostile act." EU chief Ursula von der Leyen proposed deeper cooperation with Ottawa on defence, energy, technology and critical minerals as Canada seeks partners amid its trade war with Washington. The plan remains uncertain because EU treaties do not define associate membership and all member states must approve it.
