“One of the things I am going to do with the Venezuelan Oil is fill up the Strategic National Reserves… The ‘topping out’ process will begin very shortly and is a Gift from Venezuela to the People of the United States.”
Trump may call the oil a “gift,” but it’s really an arrangement for a 100-year commercial lease and joint venture negotiated between the U.S. govt., industry operators, and Venezuela's interim administration.
The deal is less a present and more a strategic transaction following the U.S. military capture of Nicolás Maduro in January.
But Venezuela has an opportunity to benefit as well, since the deal is anticipated to draw in nearly $100 billion in private investment into the country.
Either way, the White House is hoping the move will reduce buyers’ burden at the pump, a major sore point for the GOP with midterms fast approaching...
