One Typo Sent $40 Billion in Bitcoin to Strangers. Bithumb Just Won Round Two in Court. On February 6, a Bithumb employee meant to type a reward of 2,000 Korean won; about $1.40; into a promotional payout system. Instead, the field read "BTC." Within minutes, 620,000 Bitcoin, worth more than $40 billion at the time, landed in the accounts of hundreds of ordinary users. For a brief window, some of them were instant multi-millionaires, and a handful cashed out before Bithumb could freeze anything. The exchange recovered 99.7% of the coins within 35 minutes and compensated affected users generously for the chaos. But a small group of holdouts never gave the money back; so Bithumb sued. Four unjust enrichment lawsuits, filed in March, are working through Seoul's courts. This week, Bithumb won two more rulings, covering roughly $140,000 and $3,600 in disputed proceeds. Two lawsuits remain, worth a combined $373,000. Notably, some defendants couldn't even be located for standard legal notice; Korean courts proceeded through public announcement instead.
