💥 Japan launches Aurora to bring Bitcoin payments to the global anime market

Japan Bitcoin Industry Co., Ltd. (JBI) has launched Aurora, a self-custodial Bitcoin payments platform designed to help Japanese anime, manga, gaming and other content businesses accept payments from international customers. The platform was introduced at Bitcoin Asia 2026 in Hong Kong.

Aurora lets overseas customers pay in Bitcoin through the Lightning Network, while Japanese merchants get point-of-sale and API tools for invoicing, payment tracking and integrations. Each merchant operates its own self-custodial Lightning node and receives BTC directly, meaning JBI says it does not take custody of customer funds.

According to JBI, Japanese anime content sold outside Japan generated ¥2.17 trillion ($14.8B) in 2024, up 26% year over year. Aurora aims to address payment restrictions that can prevent overseas fans from accessing Japanese streaming subscriptions, digital merchandise and limited releases.
