49% Say They’re Coming for Crypto 👀
Here’s a number that caught my attention: 49% of Gen Z respondents say they are likely to buy crypto within the next 12 months, according to a 2026 survey. That puts Gen Z ahead of Millennials at 46%, Gen X at 26%, and Boomers at 11%.
But I think the more interesting part isn't the 49%. It's what happens if even a portion of that intention turns into actual buying.
Gen Z is still a relatively young generation, which means many are only beginning to earn,save,and build investment portfolios. As their income and financial independence grow, their ability to actually allocate money to crypto grows with them. And unlike older generations, many of them were introduced to crypto before they ever became traditional investors.
If Gen Z starts moving from “I want to buy crypto” to “I regularly allocate part of my income to crypto,” the market could gradually gain a much larger base of long-term participants rather than relying mainly on cycles of speculation.
But there's another side to this. What if Gen Z's behavior changes?
If they become more educated and financially experienced, they could move away from chasing every narrative and start treating crypto as one part of a diversified portfolio. We are already seeing hints of that mindset in other research: younger investors can be attracted by growth and passive-income opportunities, while crypto investors increasingly describe diversification as a key motivation. And if that happens at scale, I think crypto's future could look very different.
Less “What's the next 100x?” More “How does crypto fit into my portfolio?” That's the transition I'd watch.
Because 49% isn't a prediction that 49% of Gen Z will suddenly buy Bitcoin tomorrow. It's a signal of potential demand waiting to be converted into actual behavior. And if Gen Z eventually becomes one of the largest investing generations, the way they choose to invest could influence what the crypto market becomes next.
