China accelerates its digital yuan push. 🇨🇳💴
China’s central bank has authorized 8 more banks to operate the digital yuan (e-CNY), bringing the total to 30 institutions. The expansion includes Ping An Bank, Hengfeng Bank, China Bohai Bank and five major regional commercial banks.
The pilot is already active across 26 regions, while Beijing is expanding e-CNY beyond everyday payments into financial markets. In August, a Chinese bank issued a 3 billion yuan green bond denominated in digital yuan.
This is more than a payment experiment: China is building an increasingly integrated CBDC infrastructure for consumers, banks and capital markets.
