I was thinking wallet recovery was basically the same everywhere: lose the key, find the seed phrase, and everything comes back.
Then I started looking closer at $DUSK and realized that assumption breaks down once you move from a transparent balance model to notes.
With Moonlight, the balance remains visible on-chain even if you lose access. With Phoenix, the notes can still exist, but without the right key they’re effectively unreadable to you.
And that changes what “recovery” actually means.
You’re not simply restoring a balance. The wallet has to scan the chain, identify your notes, decrypt them, and reconstruct what belongs to you. Recovery becomes a process rather than a single event.
That matters much more for institutions than it does for an individual.
Organizations need recovery procedures, delegated permissions, backup policies and contingencies—not just one seed phrase sitting in a vault.
So I’m starting to think the harder problem for private infrastructure like DUSK may not be the cryptography at all. It may be deciding who gets access when the original keyholder isn’t there...
