18 Years Ago Today, Bitcoin’s Digital Home Was Registered.

On August 18, 2008, the domain Bitcoin.org was registered, more than two months before the Bitcoin whitepaper was published and nearly five months before the Bitcoin network launched. The historical WHOIS record shows the domain was registered through AnonymousSpeech, a privacy-focused registration service.

Bitcoin.org itself states that the domain was originally registered and owned by Satoshi Nakamoto and Martti Malmi, Bitcoin's first two developers.

The timing is incredible. August 18, 2008: Bitcoin.org.
October 31, 2008: Bitcoin whitepaper.
January 3, 2009: Bitcoin genesis block.

What began as an anonymous domain registration eventually became the home of one of the most important technological experiments in financial history.

18 years later, Bitcoin is still here. And Satoshi's identity remains one of the biggest mysteries in technology.

Small correction to the screenshot's wording: the historical record supports the domain being associated with Satoshi, but the original WHOIS record itself lists AnonymousSpeech LLC as the registrant, so “Satoshi Nakamoto registered it” is best understood as historical attribution rather than what the raw WHOIS record literally says.
