What is funding rate?

In perpetual futures, there is no expiry date — so the market uses a funding rate to keep prices anchored to spot.

When the perpetual price is above spot, longs pay shorts. When it’s below, shorts pay longs. It’s a built-in mechanism that prevents the contract price from drifting too far from reality.

Watch the funding rate — it tells you how crowded one side of the trade is.
