Bitcoin's latest BIP-110 episode is becoming a useful reminder of how difficult it is to change a decentralized network without broad agreement.
With only around 2.6% of miners reportedly signaling support, the proposal appears far from gaining the consensus needed for widespread adoption. If nodes running BIP-110 begin rejecting blocks that don't signal for it at the specified height, the likely outcome is limited adoption rather than an immediate change to Bitcoin itself.
That's one of the interesting strengths of Bitcoin's design. A proposal doesn't become reality simply because developers support it or because part of the community wants it. Different participants can choose what software they run, and the network continues following the rules accepted by the broader ecosystem.
In that sense, disagreement isn't necessarily a failure. It can be the mechanism that prevents a small group from forcing a major change onto everyone else.
Do you think this shows Bitcoin's governance model working properly, or does it highlight how difficult meaningful upgrades have become?
