News Flash: Goldman Sachs said that the United States supports Japan’s efforts to boost the yen, and this is unlikely to undermine the dollar’s position as the world’s primary reserve currency. In the $31 trillion U.S. Treasury market, Japan is the largest foreign investor. The joint intervention last month has raised some concerns: the purpose of U.S. support for the yen may be to prevent unnecessary fluctuations in U.S. Treasuries, which could, in turn, weaken market confidence in dollar reserves. Goldman Sachs said this argument assumes that, in the future, the United States may try to prevent other countries from selling U.S. Treasuries.
