Proof-of-stake chains have a security hole nobody outside crypto research talks about. Babylon exists mostly to close it.
Every proof-of-stake chain has a quiet vulnerability called the long-range attack. In simple terms: if someone acquires old validator keys keys that are no longer active but were once valid they can rewrite history from far enough back, building an alternate chain that looks just as legitimate as the real one to a new node syncing for the first time.
Chains work around this today with "social consensus" trusted checkpoints, foundation-published block hashes, community agreement on what's real. It works, but it's centralized by admission. Somebody, somewhere, is the final judge of truth.
Bitcoin doesn't have this problem. Its proof-of-work makes rewriting history prohibitively expensive, permanently. That's the one property Bitcoin has that almost nothing else does at scale.
Babylon's actual technical contribution is timestamping other chains' block history directly onto Bitcoin. Once a checkpoint is buried under enough Bitcoin blocks, rewriting it would mean rewriting Bitcoin itself which nobody can do. The PoS chain effectively borrows Bitcoin's immutability as an external anchor for its own history.
This is a narrower, more honest claim than "Bitcoin secures your chain." It's not securing validators or preventing double-spends on the PoS side. It's solving one specific, well-known, previously unsolved problem: making history un-rewritable using the one chain that's already proven it can't be rewritten.
Not every problem in this space needs a new invention. Sometimes it needs someone to actually use the invention that already exists Bitcoin for the one job it does better than anything else.
