We usually notice security only after something breaks, which makes me wonder if we’re measuring the wrong thing. Maybe visible defenses aren’t always evidence of strength. Sometimes they’re evidence that a system expects to be challenged constantly.
That thought kept circling in my head while looking at Babylon. Not because of any specific mechanism, but because it quietly shifts attention toward a different question. Instead of asking whether people can defend value, it nudges me to ask whether incentives have been arranged so well that most participants never find it rational to attack in the first place.
Halfway through thinking about this, I realized I had been treating security as an engineering outcome. Maybe it’s closer to a coordination outcome. A network can have perfect cryptography and still fail if its participants gradually learn that exploiting the edges is more rewarding than preserving the center. The real battle isn’t always between attackers and defenders. Sometimes it’s between short-term opportunities and long-term credibility.
That changes how I look at infrastructure. The invisible layer isn’t code. It’s expectation. It’s the quiet confidence that other participants will continue behaving predictably tomorrow because doing otherwise becomes increasingly expensive in ways that aren’t immediately financial. Reputation, future access, capital routing, and social coordination all start reinforcing each other.
Perhaps the systems that last won’t be remembered for stopping dramatic failures. They’ll be remembered for creating environments where dramatic failures slowly stopped making economic sense in the first place. I’m not sure we’ve learned how to measure that yet, which may be exactly why it matters.
