So I stopped theorizing and actually ran the testnet. Native BTC as collateral, borrowing stablecoins against it on Aave v4, the whole flow. Faucet Signet BTC landed in a couple minutes. Wallet connected fast. Creating the vault was intuitive enough that I never had to guess what to click. Then I borrowed against it, and that part went through clean, no errors.
The one rough spot: waiting for the vault to flip to active. No ETA, no progress bar, so I sat there refreshing the page a few times, wondering if it was stuck or just slow. Small thing, but it's the kind of friction that tells you a product is early. Working, but early.
And that's exactly what sharpens the timing question. The tech isn't vaporware. I posted real (test) Bitcoin, kept my keys, borrowed against it, no wrap, no bridge, no custodian. Your BTC stays locked on the Bitcoin network in a Taproot script while only a verifiable record of the collateral moves to Ethereum. It does what it says.
But does a smooth testnet run mean the market's ready? Not automatically. Curiosity on testnet isn't the same as people borrowing against real BTC at scale, and that's the number that actually settles this.
Still, the setup is hard to ignore. Demand to make Bitcoin productive keeps climbing while faith in wrapped and custodial BTC keeps leaking. If that gap widens, native trustless collateral is sitting right in the middle of it.
Which loops back to early versus wrong. Having actually used it, my honest read is "right product, still early." If native BTC collateral really is the answer, is mid-2026 too early, right on time, or already late?
