I kept coming back to something small I noticed while rereading the Babylon blog post on vault design — the distinction they draw between a "vault" as most DeFi people define it versus what TBV actually is. Most vaults in DeFi pool deposits together and run strategies across them, but Babylon's version is explicitly segregated, each user's bitcoin locked in its own script rather than mixed into a shared pool. I sometimes wonder how many people assume it works the familiar way until they actually read the fine print.

What seems interesting is what that segregation implies for liquidity. A co-mingled vault can move capital efficiently, rebalance across strategies, and generally behave the way people expect a "productive" pool to behave. A segregated structure gives up some of that flexibility in exchange for isolation — my BTC doesn't get exposed to someone else's risk, and the failure of one position shouldn't cascade into another. That tradeoff feels deliberate rather than accidental.

Still, the question that comes to mind is whether this segregation limits how deep liquidity can actually get. If every vault is its own isolated unit, does the system lose the kind of aggregated depth that lending markets usually rely on for tight spreads and efficient borrowing? I'm not completely sure Babylon has fully answered that yet, or whether the Aave integration is partly there to compensate by supplying the pooled liquidity layer that TBV itself intentionally avoids.

Looking from the outside, it makes me think this is less a single product and more a division of labor — Babylon handling custody and security in isolation, Aave handling the liquidity and pricing that isolation naturally sacrifices. Whether that division scales cleanly as volumes grow, or creates friction between two systems with different philosophies, still feels unresolved to me.

The separation of concerns looks sound conceptually, but how efficiently it functions once real liquidity demands show up is something only time will reveal — anyway, time will tell🚀
