I’ve been watching @BabylonLabs_io for a while, and what keeps standing out is how plain the idea really is once you strip away the noise: keep BTC on Bitcoin, keep it self-custodied, and still let it help secure PoS networks. Babylon’s 2023 litepaper describes Bitcoin staking as a way to use idle BTC for PoS security without bridging it to another chain, while still keeping slashable security and aiming for faster unbonding. The launch announcement says the staking flow locks BTC in a self-custodial Bitcoin script and delegates only voting power to finality providers, not the coins themselves. That is a small detail on paper, but it changes the whole trust model in practice.
What makes the project more interesting is that it did not stay theoretical for long. Babylon said Phase 1 of its mainnet launched on August 16, 2024, and the Babylon Foundation later said Babylon Genesis went live on April 10, 2025 as the first blockchain secured by native Bitcoin staking. In the same April 2025 update, the foundation said more than 57,000 BTC had already been staked through the protocol. Babylon’s own learn pages describe Genesis as a Layer 1 and the first Bitcoin Supercharged Network, built with Cosmos SDK and CometBFT, where BTC helps with finality and BABY handles gas, governance, and dual staking.
The part I find most convincing is the way the ecosystem around it has started to form. Babylon’s docs say Genesis began with a permissioned phase for smart-contract deployment, which feels cautious in the right way when billions of dollars are involved. The protocol has also been audited by Coinspect, Zellic, Sherlock, Oak Security, Informal Systems, and Halborn. Around that core, support has started showing up from places like Kraken and Bitcoin Suisse, while Babylon’s own updates point to wallets, custodians, liquid staking, and BSN integrations as the project expands beyond a single chain.
