For years I treated "trustless" as a fixed state a system either has or doesn't. Reading @BabylonLabs_io design against that binary, the more accurate description looked like a process rather than a state something being reduced on a timeline, not switched off.
Start with what stays constant: Bitcoin's total value never gets wrapped or handed to a custodian. It remains self-custodied while simultaneously functioning as shared economic security for proof-of-stake networks, with slashing replacing a bridge's discretion as the enforcement layer. That's a real structural difference from custodial productivity models, where the holder's coins physically move into someone else's control.
What complicates the clean version of that story is dependency, not custody. The mechanism still relies on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and DeFi components interacting correctly, and on an emergency multisig that continues to function as governance today not hidden, but openly positioned as temporary, with a stated path toward retirement as the cryptographic system proves itself under real conditions rather than theoretical ones.
That's the trade-off marketing language tends to skip past: a disclosed, shrinking trust assumption now, against the unproven claim of a fully autonomous system later. When that multisig is finally retired, will confidence follow the code itself, or the years of it functioning without needing intervention?
