Most people describe Babylon as "Bitcoin staking without bridging." After reading the documentation, I think the more interesting design choice is what doesn't move: governance power.
Bitcoin stakers help secure Babylon Genesis and earn BABY rewards, but protocol governance belongs to BABY holders, not BTC stakers. That separation is intentional. It prevents Bitcoin's capital from automatically controlling network upgrades while still allowing BTC to strengthen economic security through Babylon's dual-staking model.
I also noticed another subtle trade-off. BTC remains in self-custody and is locked with Bitcoin-native scripts rather than being bridged, yet unbonding before the timelock depends on a covenant committee threshold, making the protocol trust-minimized rather than completely trustless.
That balance says a lot about Babylon's priorities. Instead of maximizing decentralization in every layer, it separates security, governance, and operational coordination into different roles. Whether that proves resilient will depend less on marketing and more on how incentives evolve as BABY unlocks over time and validator participation matures.
