The more I think about it, the more I suspect that the hardest part of securing a network isn’t security itself. It’s deciding who gets to coordinate it.

For a long time I assumed the chain doing the work should also be the place where every important decision lives. It felt cleaner. More self-contained. But systems rarely fail because computation is weak. They fail because coordination quietly becomes power, and power slowly becomes dependency.

That’s why Babylon’s separation between the control plane and the chains it secures kept pulling my attention in a different direction. Not because it’s an architectural choice, but because it reflects a broader shift I’ve started noticing across crypto. We’re slowly accepting that coordination and execution don’t always belong in the same place.

Halfway through thinking about this, I realized I may have been asking the wrong question. Instead of asking where trust is minimized, maybe the more interesting question is where influence accumulates. Those aren’t always the same location. A system can distribute execution while centralizing the ability to coordinate outcomes, and the second often matters more than the first.

That changes how I look at infrastructure entirely. The invisible layer isn’t the code. It’s the boundary between the actors who decide and the actors who simply respond. Whoever defines that boundary quietly shapes capital flows, governance behavior, and even market expectations without necessarily owning the assets themselves.

Maybe the next generation of infrastructure won’t compete over who executes the most transactions. Maybe it’ll compete over who becomes the least visible coordinator. And I’m still not sure whether that’s decentralization evolving… or just power becoming harder to notice.
