•Scientific Explanation With Timing
Every year during Eid, many people notice that Saudi Arabia celebrates one day earlier than Bangladesh. The reason behind this is not religion alone — it is mainly science. The image above helps explain the complete system in a simple way.
•The Position of the Earth, Moon, and Sun
The moon does not produce its own light. It becomes visible only when sunlight reflects from its surface. When the new moon is born, it stays very close to the sun. Because of this, it cannot be seen immediately from every country.
When the sun sets in a country, the sky becomes dark enough to see the very thin crescent moon. This is why moon-sighting always happens just after sunset.
•Why Saudi Arabia Sees the Moon First
Saudi Arabia is located in the western part of Asia, while Bangladesh is located much further east. Because the Earth rotates from west to east, sunset happens earlier in Saudi Arabia.
So what happens is:
• The sun sets in Saudi Arabia first
• The new crescent moon becomes visible there
• At that time, the sun is still up in Bangladesh
• The sky in Bangladesh is still bright, so the moon cannot be seen yet
This creates a natural delay between the two countries.
•The Time Difference Between the Two Countries
Scientifically, the moon seen in Saudi Arabia is usually 8 to 12 hours older when it becomes visible in Bangladesh.
For example:
• Saudi Arabia may see the new crescent at 7:00 PM
• When sunset happens in Bangladesh later, the moon has already moved further away from the sun
• That means the moon becomes easier to see, but it appears several hours later
So it is not a different moon — it is the same moon, but seen at a different time because of Earth’s rotation.
•Why This Often Causes Eid to Be One Day Later
If the moon is very young (too thin), Bangladesh may not be able to see it on the same day even though Saudi Arabia already has. In that case:
• Saudi Arabia celebrates Eid the next day
• Bangladesh celebrates Eid one day later
This is a natural astronomical difference, not a mistake.
••Conclusion••
The reason Saudi Arabia sees the moon earlier than Bangladesh is completely scientific. It happens because of:
• Earth’s rotation
• The position of the moon near the sun
• The difference in sunset time between the two countries
