According to CoinDesk, Google has initiated legal action against a group accused of uploading fraudulent applications to Google Play. The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of New York, alleges that Yunfeng Sun and Hongnam Cheung committed hundreds of acts of wire fraud, causing harm to Google and approximately 100,000 of its users. The defendants are accused of making multiple misrepresentations to Google, including false information about their identity, location, and the nature of the applications they uploaded.

Victims were enticed to download these apps with the promise of high returns from investments in cryptocurrency and other products, a promise the lawsuit describes as 'illusory'. When users attempted to withdraw their balances, they were asked to pay various fees to recover their investments and alleged profits.

Halimah DeLaine Prado, general counsel at Google, described the lawsuit as a unique opportunity to combat bad actors running an extensive crypto scheme to defraud users. She stated that the lawsuit not only allows Google to use its resources to protect users but also serves as a precedent to future bad actors that such behavior will not be tolerated.
