A synthetic diamond made from graphite is much stronger than natural ones

Previously, such diamonds were extracted only from impact sites of meteorites. Today, scientists have learned to produce them in the laboratory.

Chinese researchers have synthesized an ultra-hard hexagonal diamond called lonsdaleite. The artificial crystal turned out to be about 40% harder than natural diamonds.

It can withstand temperatures up to 1,100 ℃ and a pressure of about 155 gigapascals, whereas natural diamonds only withstand around 100 gigapascals and temperatures up to 700 ℃.

🇷🇺 The Mirny diamond mine in Russia is one of the largest pits dug by humans on Earth, and its scale is almost impossible to grasp at first glance. The open-pit mine stretches over more than a mile and goes deep into the ground, creating powerful air currents that move unpredictably inside and above the crater. These whirlwinds have become such a hazard that authorities have banned any helicopter flights over the mine.

Tardigrades are tiny animals often measuring less than a millimeter, but their resistance is extraordinary.
Nicknamed water bears, they can survive temperatures near absolute zero as well as temperatures above 100 °C.
When they lack water, they enter a state of dormancy called cryptobiosis, where their metabolism becomes almost nonexistent.
In this state, some have survived for decades before resuming normal life after rehydration.
They also withstand the vacuum of space and radiation levels that would be fatal to most living beings.
In 2007, tardigrades were even exposed directly to space during a mission, and several returned alive to Earth.
These incredible creatures remind us that the greatest champions of survival are sometimes invisible to the naked eye.
