🐟 On-chain Breakdown 01｜Why can the project still act even after the contract has lost permissions?
When many people look at a new coin, the first thing they do is:
“Owner is 0x000..., permissions are already gone—safe.”
In fact, this is one of the most common misconceptions on-chain.
Losing the Owner ≠ losing all permissions.
renounceOwnership() usually only relinquishes the Owner role.
But in a contract, there may still be:
🔹 MINTER_ROLE — still able to mint
🔹 ADMIN_ROLE — still able to manage certain parameters
🔹 operator / manager — separate operational permissions
🔹 ProxyAdmin — the proxy contract can still be upgraded
🔹 Whitelist / blacklist controlling addresses
🔹 Separate addresses controlling things like fees and trading switches
🔹 External contracts that hold the actual control logic
And in some contracts, even the key functions might have no onlyOwner restriction at all.
So seeing:
✅ Ownership Renounced
doesn’t directly mean:
❌ The contract can no longer be modified at all
❌ Cannot mint
❌ Cannot restrict trading
❌ The project has completely lost control
What you should really ask is:
“Who else still has permissions in this contract?”
Not:
“Is the Owner still there?”
On-chain, there’s no single statement like “permissions are lost” that can prove safety.
Code doesn’t lie—but you have to know where to look.

Alipay: Seeking Police Assistance
On May 15th, Alipay provided an update regarding the viral claim that "a user donated 1.84 million without knowledge".
Alipay stated that it has confirmed, "The Alipay platform is executing payment instructions issued by users in normal operation. Due to suspicions of account sharing with others, there is a possibility of illegal activities, and Alipay is seeking assistance from the police." Recently, news about "Alipay users being deducted 1.84 million for donations" has spread online, causing widespread attention. Several related topics have topped Weibo's hot search list.
According to a netizen from Shanxi, with the surname Lan, she discovered three years ago that her Alipay account was frequently logged out by others. She immediately contacted Alipay's customer service and requested to disable all payment functions of her account.
However, just two days after the payment functions were disabled, her account funds were transferred out in six transactions, totaling over 1.84 million, without her knowledge, under the guise of donations during the night. The netizen with the surname Lan claimed that she has been trying to protect her rights for three years without understanding the reason.
Bank investigations revealed that while Alipay could not process transactions or transfers with the payment functions disabled, it could still make charitable donations. Personnel from the involved foundation stated that the funds were used for public welfare and the execution has been completed.
