Here’s a suggestion for everyone: even if you think there may still be one last dip, you absolutely must not stick to a short-selling mindset anymore. No one knows whether the cycle bottom is 50k or 40k, but timing is crucial. Suppose you buy into half at 60k—then even if it drops to 40k at the extreme, if you buy in the other half, your average cost will be 50k, which is only 16% lower than the current price. But if, at this point, you have a short position and the price rebounds to 70k (which is completely possible), you would also lose 16%. And this kind of rebound will completely throw off your timing, because you don’t know whether there really is a last dip. Holding a short is not something you can “square it off” smoothly—adding doesn’t work either.

If you’re good at trading, you cut off your shorts with a stop loss; but longs are hard to reopen afterward. If you’re doing poorly, you end up trapped in the short position—ever since the beginning of the bull market, thinking about how to short at higher prices.

When the market turns from bear to bull, it’s the people who haven’t switched from short-thinking who get killed—one mistake leads to another.
