European banks can only hold 1% of Tier 1 capital in $BTC under Article 501d (EU Capital Requirements Regulation, live since July 2024).

The math is brutal: 1,250% risk weight at 8% minimum capital ratio = €1 capital for every €1 of $BTC held.

This is why EU banks are stuck offering custody and trading services instead of actually stacking sats on their own balance sheet. The economics don't work.

Basel Committee promised an update on crypto standards by end of 2024. That's the document that could change everything.

If you're watching for institutional adoption signals, this is the regulatory bottleneck. Banks can't treat $BTC as a real treasury asset yet—only as a client service product.

TL;DR: EU banks are structurally blocked from being $BTC holders. Watch Basel's next move.
