Binance Hack Hits $6.3 Billion as Exchange Freezes Withdrawals

  • The exchange estimates a $6.3 billion impact and promises to cover losses.

  • Approximately $3 billion has been frozen, but recovery remains a separate process.

  • Researchers attribute the attack to North Korea; the exchange has not confirmed responsibility.

The Binance hack has left an estimated $6.3 billion in affected assets, the exchange said in an October 30 update. Deposits and withdrawals remain suspended while investigators examine unauthorized transactions. The company pledged to cover losses using its protection fund and corporate resources. Bitcoin fell to a six-week low as the incident unsettled cryptocurrency markets.

Binance Hack Prompts Asset Freezes and Withdrawal Suspension

In its security update, the exchange said partners had frozen approximately $3 billion on-chain. Frozen assets are restricted from moving; that does not mean they have already been recovered or returned.

The company’s initial investigation pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop. It said the attacker may have accessed a service container and submitted unauthorized withdrawal transactions.

The update also said investigators had found no evidence of leaked wallet private keys. Those preliminary findings leave the complete attack path unresolved, with a technical report promised after verification.

Following the Binance hack, the platform revoked affected address authorization and engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners. It also promised updated proof-of-reserves information once remediation is complete.

Co-founder Yi He indicated withdrawals were expected to resume by Sunday. That remains an operational target rather than confirmation that services have restarted.

Binance Hack Attribution Remains Separate From Company Findings

TRM Labs attributed the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group with high confidence, citing on-chain and off-chain intelligence. Its analysis estimated roughly $6.36 billion moved across ten blockchains, mostly within about 20 minutes.

Binance has not independently confirmed that attribution. The distinction matters while investigators continue assessing both the entry point and responsibility.

The Binance hack exceeds the exchange’s reported $1 billion Secure Asset Fund for Users. Management says company funds will supplement that reserve, rather than relying on the protection fund alone.

Separately, Aave froze new deposits and borrowing across its DAO-operated V3 and V4 markets as a precaution. The protocol said its contracts were unaffected and existing positions remained overcollateralized.

Aave users could still withdraw assets and repay loans under the announced restrictions. Binance.US said its separate platform was unaffected and services continued normally.
