US Bitcoin ETFs just had their biggest day in weeks, yet the price went down. Here is what's behind it and what I'm watching before the Fed meeting.

Here's something that caught my eye this week: half a billion dollars flowed into Bitcoin ETFs on Monday, and the price still slipped. When good news can't push a price up, I stop and ask who is selling into it. 🤔

📊 What Happened?

On Monday, US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in about $527M, their best day since September 22. Bitcoin still dipped around 0.5% to about $81,383, just under its 50-day moving average.

It has since bounced to roughly $82,700, so we're right below the $83,000 mark again.

🔍 The Headline Hides a Detail

Look at who the buyer was. BlackRock's IBIT took in about $665M, while Fidelity and Grayscale funds lost around $138M combined. CoinDesk reports the whole day came down to one issuer.

That's one big decision, not the whole market piling in. Across October, ETF flows are still about $88M negative, so one strong day doesn't change the month.

🛡️ Options Traders Are Playing Defense

This is the part I find most telling. On Deribit, puts traded at more than 2:1 against calls, and the October 30 $80,000 put was the busiest contract of all.

In plain words, people are paying up for protection, not for upside. The big $90K to $100K call positions were built back when Bitcoin was near $87,000, so they show old optimism, not today's view.

⚖️ The Long Side Is Crowded

Longs hold about 55% of positions but took roughly 69% of recent liquidations. Bitcoin's funding rate sits near 8.8% annualized, more than double Ether's, which tells me traders are leaning long.

The good news is that total liquidations dropped by more than half to about $155M, so the pain is easing.

🔄 Selling Pressure Is Fading

Glassnode reports that exchange inflows from short-term holders are back to their yearly average. Two weeks ago, they were at a one-year high, as holders sold into the rally that peaked near $87,300.

Less selling isn't the same as more buying, though. The ETF bid is real, but it isn't strong enough yet to lift the price.

⚠️ What Could Go Wrong

A move below $80,000 could turn all those put hedges into forced selling. Oil near $110 a barrel and Treasury yields above 5% also keep pressure on risk assets.

Hashdex says Bitcoin needs to reclaim $84,000 before the Fed's October 27-28 meeting to show real strength.

👀 Three Things to Watch Next

  1. Does Bitcoin reclaim $84,000 before the Fed meeting?

  2. Do ETF inflows spread beyond one issuer?

  3. Does $80,000 hold as support?

💡 The Takeaway

Bitcoin absorbed about $527M of ETF demand without rising, while traders bought protection below $80,000.

Both signals are worth watching, but neither confirms that a bigger drop or a bigger rally is coming.

I would pay particular attention to whether ETF inflows broaden beyond a single issuer and whether $80,000 holds before the Fed meeting.

If you had to watch only one this week, would you choose ETF flows or the $80,000 level? And what matters more to you: institutional demand or price action?

That is the part worth watching.
