Google Quantum Reduces Magic State Errors 40x to 99.99% Logical Fidelity on Willow, Cutting Physical Qubit Requirements

Google says it has overcome a major bottleneck in quantum computing by demonstrating magic state cultivation on its Willow processor, reducing errors by around 40 times and achieving 99.99% logical fidelity.

Magic states are essential for useful, error-corrected quantum programs but can consume up to 95% of system capacity. Producing them more cleanly could significantly reduce the physical qubits, cryogenic infrastructure and capital required for a commercial machine.

A lower physical qubit count directly compresses the cost and timeline to a commercial-scale system.

The result turns a long-standing theoretical concept into an experimental reality and helps de-risk use cases such as materials discovery, logistics and financial modelling.

Google still needs to prove the technique works at much larger scale before practical quantum computing becomes viable.
