🔥 Vitalik Goes Full Paranoid: New AI Mode Hides Your Prompts, Payments & Identity

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin just unveiled an experimental “Paranoid Mode” for his personal AI agent — designed to make it much harder for anyone to link your identity, location, or payments to the prompts you send.

Unveiled on October 16, the open-source setup stacks several privacy layers:

Separate Tor circuit for every new conversation

• Cover traffic to mask real requests

• Local LLM prompt rewriting (Vitalik is using a small model like Qwen) that strips identifying details before anything leaves your machine

• zkAPI payments on Ethereum mainnet (accepts ETH & USDC) so the AI provider can’t easily link payments to specific users

The agent also runs inside a sandbox for extra isolation. Vitalik says the system is “getting quite usable,” though it adds noticeable latency, especially when starting new sessions.

Important caveats
This is still experimental. Providers can still see the rewritten prompts, and sophisticated timing analysis or collusion between the AI service and network observers could reduce the protection. It’s not complete anonymity — just a meaningful step toward reducing the data trail AI usage normally leaves.

The move also highlights Ethereum’s growing role in private AI infrastructure. zkAPI itself launched on mainnet earlier this month as a way to pay for metered APIs without revealing identity.

Privacy-focused tooling like this keeps Ethereum relevant in the AI era. Whether it drives short-term price action is another story, but the long-term narrative is clear.
