Forty years in prison and 1,230 bitcoin forfeited: that is how the Empire Market case ended for one of its creators.
Per CoinDesk, Raheim Hamilton was sentenced in Chicago and fined $5 million. The dark web market ran from 2018 to 2020 and handled more than $430 million in transactions. The forfeited $BTC is worth about $101 million. His partner forfeited about 1,584 BTC and awaits sentencing.
My view: cases like this keep showing that a public ledger is a bad place to hide. Crypto paid for the market, and crypto tracing helped end it.
💬 Do big forfeitures like this help or hurt bitcoin's public image?
