Bitcoin ETFs Now Hold ~6.1% of All BTC. The 10% Milestone Is Closer Than You Think.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs are quietly becoming one of the biggest holders of BTC on Earth — and the math is getting interesting.
The Numbers (as of Oct 2, 2026):
-BTC price: ~$85,300–$86,500
-Market cap: ~$1.71 trillion
-Circulating supply: ~20.09 million BTC (95.7% of the 21M cap)
-US spot ETFs hold: ~1.29 million BTC (~$110.5B in assets)
-That's 6.14% of all 21 million BTC — roughly 1 in every 16 coins
-BlackRock's IBIT alone holds ~801,000 BTC (3.81%), more than all world governments combined
The Path to 10%:
-10% = ~2.1 million BTC = ~$163B in ETF assets
-Gap to close: ~$52–60 billion more
-At the recent pace (~$1.7B/month average since launch), that's roughly 2.5–3 more years — around mid-2029
-September alone brought $2.65B in net inflows, the second-best month since Oct 2025. October opened with $102.7M on day one.
Why It Matters:
-Every coin in an ETF sits in cold storage — removed from the tradable float
-At 10%, 1 in 10 Bitcoins would be locked up
-Thin float = sharper rallies on demand, but also steeper drops when it fades
-ETF holdings aren't permanent — redemptions can return coins to market fast (Sept 15 saw a $450M single-day outflow after the Clarity Act failed)
The Bigger Picture:
• BTC on exchanges has fallen to 5.84% — lowest since 2017
• ~70% of all mined coins are now "spoken for" (lost, held long-term, or in ETFs/governments)
• Only ~29% is genuinely still in play
• Next halving in April 2028 cuts new supply from 450 to 225 BTC/day
The supply squeeze is real. The question isn't if ETFs hit 10% — it's how fast, and what the price does on the way.
