Great news for privacy advocates! New York-based cryptography firm [alloc] init has proposed "Shielded Bitcoin," a system that enables completely private transfers directly on the Bitcoin network.
Here is how the proposal could change the ecosystem:
🛡️ 100% Privacy: Unlike standard public Bitcoin transactions, this system would hide the transaction amounts, senders, and receivers directly on the blockchain.
⚡ No Soft Fork Required: The protocol operates as a privacy layer on top of the Bitcoin L1 without requiring a separate blockchain or any changes to Bitcoin's underlying consensus rules.
🔐 The Tech Behind the Magic: The system borrows its privacy architecture directly from Zcash.
Encrypted Notes & Nullifiers: Value is held in encrypted notes, and public nullifiers are utilized to track state and prevent double-spending.
Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK-Proofs): These cryptographic proofs verify that transactions are valid without revealing any underlying details.
Indexers: Because the Bitcoin network cannot read the encrypted data, a separate off-chain software called "indexers" scans the chain to interpret and verify the information.
👁️ Selective Disclosure: The system is non-custodial, meaning users retain full control of their keys. Users can also utilize view-only keys to selectively disclose transaction histories to auditors or trusted parties.
⚠️ Current Challenges: This remains a research proposal. Before becoming a reality, developers must overcome hurdles such as increased transaction sizes, ensuring sufficient adoption for true anonymity, and designing the mechanisms (peg-in and peg-out) to move BTC into and out of the shielded transfer system.
If "Shielded Bitcoin" goes live, does this make BTC the ultimate perfect money? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! 👇
