AlphaSense data shows that in August and September of this year, mentions of open-weight or open-source models by U.S. companies during earnings calls and investor meetings increased by about 6 times year-over-year. PNC Financial, logistics company CH Robinson, and Siemens have all recently publicly discussed related applications.The most direct reason companies are starting to switch models is the bill. Tinder's annualized AI spending rose from about $1 million in January this year to about $10 million in July, and it has now begun routing some ordinary requests to open-weight models.AT&T's scale is larger. Currently, about 40% of AI tasks have been handed over to open models, and the company plans to further increase that to about 70%. Its internal AI system processes about 45 billion tokens per day, assigning simple tasks to cheaper models while continuing to use frontier models such as OpenAI and Anthropic for complex tasks.
