On September 24, Block announced the integration of Bitcoin’s Lightning Network into the x402 payment standard. According to Odaily, the protocol allows servers to verify payments after sending an HTTP 402 response. It uses Lightning invoices and payment preimages to unlock data after successful payment.
Steve Lee, head of Block’s open-source Bitcoin development team, Spiral, said the integration aims to enable instant and low-cost micropayments. However, Block has not announced when the technology will be available on Cash App, Square, or Bitkey. The Python implementation also requires further testing on a real Bitcoin Lightning node before wider use.
