After months of Bitcoin taking most of the attention altcoins are finally showing some life again....
And this time, the move is spreading beyond just one or two coins.
On September 18, Bitcoin climbed nearly 6%, but several major altcoins moved even faster. Ethereum gained around 7.3%, XRP 8.9%, and Solana jumped 12.7%. Some smaller names showed even stronger moves, with NEAR, UNI and APT among the standout performers.
That naturally brings back one big question:
Is altseason finally starting?
Not quite yet.
A true altseason usually means a broad group of altcoins consistently outperforming Bitcoin—not simply a few coins having strong days.
BlockchainCenter's Altcoin Season Index currently sits at 47. Its methodology considers it an altseason when at least 75% of the top 50 eligible cryptocurrencies outperform Bitcoin over the previous 90 days. By that definition, the market hasn't reached altseason yet.
But something is clearly changing underneath the surface.
The same index moved from Bitcoin Season into the neutral zone on September 2. Shorter-term measurements from another altseason tracker are also showing stronger altcoin performance than its longer-term readings, suggesting momentum has improved recently even though broad leadership hasn't been confirmed.
We can see that change in individual sectors too.
Solana recently reached a seven-month high around $112, while Solana ecosystem tokens including Jupiter, Raydium and Meteora jumped roughly 15%–20% during the same 24-hour period. Zcash, HYPE and several other altcoins have also posted strong moves.
This looks more like selective rotation than the classic altseason traders remember.
In previous cycles, money often moved from Bitcoin into Ethereum, then large-cap altcoins and eventually smaller coins. During the strongest phases, almost everything seemed to rise together.
The 2026 market has behaved differently.
Research earlier this year found that Bitcoin-to-altcoin trading activity had fallen to its weakest levels since 2021. Capital was also becoming concentrated in fewer major altcoins instead of spreading evenly across hundreds of smaller projects.
That could be an important clue.
Maybe the next altseason won't look like the old ones.
Instead of every random token moving simply because the overall market is bullish, capital could continue concentrating around specific narratives and ecosystems showing stronger activity, adoption or investor interest.
That means seeing SOL, ZEC, UNI or another group of coins explode doesn't automatically confirm that the entire altcoin market has entered altseason.
For stronger confirmation, traders would want to see the rally broaden, more major altcoins consistently outperform Bitcoin, and altseason indicators continue moving toward their traditional thresholds.
So yes, altcoins are finally moving.
But based on current market breadth, calling it a full altseason would still be early.
What we're seeing right now may be something more interesting: the early stages of a rotation where only certain altcoins are getting the strongest attention.
And whether that strength eventually spreads across the wider market is the real story to watch next.
