Vitalik’s AI Security Thesis Flips the Usual Fear $ETH co-founder Vitalik Buterin is pushing back on the idea that stronger AI automatically makes cybersecurity unwinnable. His argument is almost the reverse: if AI becomes powerful enough to discover increasingly complex vulnerabilities, it may also become powerful enough to help formally prove that critical software behaves exactly as intended. THE FEAR Better AI lowers the cost of finding exploits. Attackers can search code faster, test more attack paths and automate work that previously required specialist teams. BUTERIN’S COUNTER Defenders get the same capability. Formal verification can turn security properties into mathematical statements and prove that software satisfies them. Buterin argues that sufficiently advanced AI could make those proofs dramatically cheaper and easier to produce. THE CATCH Proving software secure first requires defining what “secure” actually means. For something like an encrypted messenger, that can involve forged messages, replay attacks, compromised servers, malicious libraries, operating-system vulnerabilities and metadata leaks. Buterin notes that the definition itself can run to more than 1,000 lines of code. So the AI security race may not be decided simply by who finds bugs faster.
