A former Kansas credit union loan officer has been sentenced to 19 months in federal prison after admitting to stealing $171,164 through a series of fraudulent member loans.
According to court records, Ricky Naovoravong, 39, of Garden City, worked at Garden City Teachers Federal Credit Union. He created fake loans using members’ identities and redirected payments from their savings accounts into his own account.
The scheme reportedly began in November 2020 and continued until August 2024, with new fraudulent loans allegedly created to cover payments on earlier ones and prevent members from receiving suspicious account notices.
In addition to the prison sentence, Naovoravong was ordered to pay $207,920 in restitution. The case highlights the risks financial institutions face when employees misuse access to customers’ personal and financial information.
