On-device AI is arriving preloaded on a laptop for the first time through a partnership between Perplexity and HP (HPQ), the companies said Tuesday, starting with the ZBook Ultra G3A workstation before expanding to more HP devices.

The feature, called Portable Computer, is a local-first version of Perplexity’s Computer tool that runs tasks entirely on the device rather than routing them through cloud servers. Perplexity announced the rollout on X, describing it as a way to keep private data on the machine itself rather than sending prompts and files to a remote data center.

On-device AI means the language model doing the reasoning runs on the laptop’s own chip, not on a server farm somewhere else, so a user’s documents and screen contents never leave the hardware.

Why Local Processing Is Suddenly A Selling Point

Cloud AI tools like ChatGPT or the standard Perplexity Computer send user data to remote servers for processing, which raises concerns for anyone handling sensitive files, contracts or source code.

Portable Computer avoids that by running a smaller model locally, trading some raw capability for privacy and offline reliability.

It mirrors a broader industry shift toward AI PCs that pair chips with enough on-device compute to handle inference without a network connection.

From Cloud Dependence To Full System Trust

Perplexity’s shift toward on-device processing follows a deepening relationship with OpenAI, whose Astra model now handles Perplexity’s cloud-based Computer tool for tasks like writing communications and monitoring production systems. OpenAI said Perplexity now checks in with Astra “much less frequently than with earlier models,” a sign the company is comfortable letting AI systems operate with less oversight both in the cloud and, now, on local hardware.

That comfort level matters because it signals Perplexity’s willingness to hand over more autonomy across both ends of its stack, cloud and device, at the same time.

What Happens When Every Laptop Ships With A Model Inside

HP has not disclosed which chip handles the local inference or how many devices will get Portable Computer beyond the ZBook Ultra G3A. The bigger question is whether rival PC makers follow with their own preloaded assistants, turning on-device AI from a premium workstation feature into a standard laptop spec within the next product cycle.
