CALIFORNIA MOVES CLOSER TO BANNING POLITICAL MEME COINS
California is taking another step toward restricting meme coins linked to government officials. AB 2409 has passed both the state Assembly and Senate and is now awaiting the Governor’s signature.
If enacted, government officials and certain public employees in California would be prohibited from issuing meme coins.
More importantly, starting January 1, 2027, crypto platforms would be prohibited from listing newly issued meme coins for California residents if those tokens were issued by or created in partnership with federal, state, or local officials.
The scope is specific: California is not banning meme coins as a whole. The bill targets tokens directly associated with government officials, limiting the ability to combine public office with the issuance of speculative digital assets.
The move could establish a clearer legal distinction between ordinary meme coins and politically linked tokens. If AB 2409 becomes law, California would also become one of the states taking a more direct regulatory approach toward this category of crypto assets.
