KOSPI surges—but the rate-hike reality check remains
South Korea’s KOSPI closed at 6,912.37, gaining 1.53% and briefly moving close to the 7,000 mark. The rally was led by semiconductor stocks after Nvidia reported stronger-than-expected revenue of $96.2 billion, reinforcing optimism around AI infrastructure and memory-chip demand.
Samsung Electronics rose 1.72%, while SK hynix gained 2.49%. However, the momentum cooled after the Bank of Korea raised its benchmark rate from 2.75% to 3%, its second consecutive hike.
The move highlights a key market tension: robust AI-led earnings expectations on one side, and tighter monetary policy and potential economic slowdown risks on the other. Foreign and institutional investors were net buyers, while retail investors sold heavily.
The KOSPI’s next test may be whether semiconductor strength can overcome rising borrowing costs. Is the AI rally broadening—or becoming increasingly concentrated in a few major names?
