Zheng Yuanjie, author of King of Fairy Tales, bought ten apartments in Beijing to store millions of letters sent by young readers nationwide. Decades later those flats were worth tens of millions of yuan. Starting more than ten years ago, he would randomly open ten letters whenever the mood struck, post them on Weibo and ask netizens to track down the original writers. When located, he would personally visit those former young readers. Zheng rode the wave of his era. Though not highly formally educated, he possessed rich imagination, and his fairy-tale works shaped an entire generation.
