India Set to Launch Its First Tokenized Corporate Bonds.
India is preparing to launch its first tokenized corporate bond issue in September, with state-owned power financier REC expected to issue less than $57 million worth of bonds. The pilot will use blockchain technology to enable faster settlement.
What makes it even more interesting is that investors will use India’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) to purchase the bonds. A new securities wallet, known as DEMAT 2.0, will record the bond holdings on a distributed ledger.
The pilot will initially be limited to selected investors, with a secondary market potentially coming by December. It’s another major step toward bringing traditional financial assets onchain, showing that tokenization is moving beyond crypto and deeper into mainstream financial markets.
