Ethereum developers have proposed a new post-quantum-ready deposit contract that would support variable-length public keys and credential metadata, using scheme identifiers to distinguish cryptographic systems while reserving Scheme 0 for existing BLS deposits. The design would replace the legacy deposit contract’s Merkle-tree mechanism with execution-layer requests based on EIP-7685 and introduce an irreversible migration switch that could first enable, then permanently disable, new BLS deposits as Ethereum transitions toward post-quantum signatures.
