Now I think that misses an important layer — how efficiently those blocks actually move across the network.
What caught my attention in Dusk is Kadcast.
Instead of relying on unstructured Gossip, where messages are repeatedly forwarded across neighboring nodes, Kadcast uses a structured Kademlia-based overlay to make message propagation more targeted.
That sounds like a small architectural choice, but the numbers make it interesting.
Dusk’s updated whitepaper cites research showing Kadcast can reduce bandwidth usage by roughly 25–50% compared with Gossip-style protocols.
To me, the important part isn’t simply “25–50% less bandwidth.”
It’s what that efficiency could mean for a network handling blocks, transactions, and consensus messages simultaneously: less redundant traffic, more predictable communication, and potentially lower resource requirements for nodes.
There’s also evidence this isn’t just a whitepaper concept. Dusk maintains an official Kadcast implementation, and its 2024 security audit scored the protocol 9.8/10 overall.
My takeaway: consensus may decide what the network agrees on, but networking determines how efficiently that agreement travels.
