At first I assumed Dusk’s voting process was mostly about reaching a quorum before a timeout. But the more I looked, the treatment of a missing quorum caught my attention. If the validation step cannot gather enough votes in time, it does not simply declare the block invalid. It produces a NoQuorum result, which is then carried into ratification. The next committee gets to vote on that outcome rather than restarting the whole process immediately. That creates a small distinction between “the block failed” and “the network could not decide.” Those are very different situations, especially when provisioners may be offline or messages are delayed. The protocol keeps that uncertainty visible for another step before deciding whether the iteration should fail. I find that more interesting than the timeout itself. It suggests that silence is treated as information, but not necessarily as rejection.
So maybe the quieter question is how much uncertainty a consensus system should preserve before it finally turns absence of agreement into failure?
