China has ordered the recall of more than 4 million vehicles over safety concerns surrounding retractable and hidden door handles, according to the BBC. The recall includes around 2.98 million China made Tesla vehicles, along with models produced by XPeng, Xiaomi and Geely.

Regulators raised concerns that hidden door handles can be difficult to locate or operate during emergencies, potentially making it harder for passengers to exit a vehicle quickly after a crash.

Tesla said it is recalling certain Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles in China. The company said some handles may be difficult to identify and use when their color closely matches the vehicle’s interior trim.

To address the issue, Tesla plans to add warning labels and introduce a software update designed to automatically lower the windows after a collision, potentially making emergency exits easier.

China previously announced restrictions on hidden door handles in February. Under new regulations scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, vehicles will be required to have a mechanical door release on both the inside and outside.

The move highlights growing safety concerns surrounding increasingly futuristic vehicle designs. While flush and retractable handles can improve a car’s appearance and aerodynamics, regulators are now placing greater emphasis on ensuring passengers can quickly escape a vehicle during emergencies.
