DuskEVM opened its testnet on August 10. One point I noticed is quite interesting: developers can deploy smart contracts on @Dusk #dusk using Solidity, Hardhat and familiar Ethereum tools, instead of having to get used to a new ecosystem
At first, I only thought: “Oh, the NPEX execution layer is actually live now.”
But thinking about it more, I don’t think we should get too excited yet. Right now, it’s only developer access. I haven’t seen any smart contracts actually running and the volume and activity aren’t enough to say settlement has taken place. Simply put, the way in is there, but there still isn’t much happening inside
It wasn’t until last week that developers could start building on infrastructure serving tokenized securities trading. The €300 million figure for tokenized securities can easily make people think these assets are already on-chain and being used. But that’s not actually the case
Honestly, I think this makes more sense. Dusk now has the foundation to make it happen, but that doesn’t mean it’s being used. Building the infrastructure doesn’t mean there are already products running on it, let alone prove real demand.
I don’t think this is a small thing. Completing the foundation before transaction flows appear makes perfect sense, especially when the destination is a system solid enough for large institutions and regulators to trust and use.
Looking back, I realize I was expecting things to move faster than the chain is actually progressing. Having a partner can easily make people assume that relationship has already gone into operation. But there is still a big gap between “being there” and “actually running.”
Now what I care about is how long it will take to fill this gap. Will developers quickly enter the DuskEVM sandbox and start having things run on it, or will the testnet remain fairly quiet?
If I had to choose one thing to watch next, I’d wait to see whether people actually start building on DuskEVM or whether there still isn’t much interaction happening there.
