MSCI Could Put Bitcoin Treasury Companies on Trial.

MSCI is considering a new methodology that could push companies like Strategy and Metaplanet out of major equity indexes if they are judged to look more like investment vehicles than operating businesses. A May 2026 simulation already flagged both companies for potential removal, although no deletions have been approved yet.

The proposal isn't specifically targeting Bitcoin. Instead, MSCI wants to identify companies whose balance sheets are dominated by non-operating assets, weak operating cash flow and heavy dependence on external capital. That puts companies built around continuously raising money to accumulate BTC directly in the spotlight.

For Strategy, the implications could be significant. Index funds that track MSCI benchmarks may have to reduce or completely exit their positions if the company is removed, potentially creating mechanical selling pressure on MSTR. Metaplanet and other digital asset treasury companies could face the same issue.

MSCI will accept feedback until September 30, with a decision expected by October 16 and potential implementation in the November 2026 index review. The bigger question isn't just whether Strategy stays in an index. It's whether traditional markets will continue treating Bitcoin treasury companies as operating businesses or start viewing them as publicly traded crypto investment vehicles.
