While reading about Dusk, one thing stuck with me throughout the entire process: a pretty straightforward question: Should financial applications have everything on a public blockchain? I've gotten to the point where I don't even think about blockchain transparency anymore. It's great to be able to see wallet activity, balances, transfers and interactions with contracts, but when the same infrastructure is supposed to be used for serious financial transactions, that's not going to be very convenient. Dusk does it differently by introducing the smart contract layer to a more centralized design that is confidential.
That turned my head around with the project. I'm not as interested in the term 'privacy' as I am in what it can actually be used for by developers. This might be a practical constraint for some applications if financial logic is able to work without compromising sensitive data through the use of confidential contracts. But until I see a lot more, I would have my opinions to revise. What is the number of developers who are actively developing? What is actually going on with the activity on-chain? But how difficult is it to incorporate confidentiality without making apps more difficult to use? Those questions are important because if people don't build on good infrastructure, then it is of little use to them. I’m now paying more attention to the adoption story than anything else, as that should be a good indicator if Dusk is addressing a real problem.
